That device is what we got to see a glimpse of this week. It’s not a radical shift like what its previous generation attempted, but instead a return to form. In fact, it’s heavily inspired by many of Apple’s past products.

If find this concept extremely appealing. If I could only self-host it somehow and maybe use it with another cloud provider – e.g. OwnCloud or NextCloud. What a great implementation, feature set, and ease of use.

Update: Apparently I could try to self-host a blot site as its code is open source.

Playdate von Panic – eine mobile Spielkonsole und die erste Hardware von den Machern meines Lieblings-Code-Editors ↦

Playdate is both very familiar, and totally new. It’s yellow, and fits perfectly in a pocket. It has a black-and-white screen with high reflectivity, a crystal-clear image, and no backlight. And of course, it has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C, and a headphone jack. But it also has a crank. Yes, a crank: a cute, rotating analog controller that flips out from the side. It’s literally revolutionary.

Die Hardware sieht fantastisch aus. Hoffentlich bleibt der Eindruck, wenn man das Playdate in den Händen hält. Die Idee, 12 Spiele im Wochenrhythmus zu veröffentlichen – besonders ohne zusätzliche Kosten – ist sicher auch charmant. Ich hoffe nur, dass die geneigte Besitzerin nicht alle 12 Wochen ein neues Playdate erwerben muss.

Leider hat sich meine Theorie, dass ich mit meinem knappen Zocker-Zeit-Budget wohl doch eher ein mobiler Spieler bin, nicht bewahrheitet. Meine Nintendo Switch, der Bittboy, die GameShell und der Odroid Go können die potentiellen freien Minuten nicht für sich proklamieren. Meh.

Trotzdem werde ich mir wohl ein PlayDate zulegen. Und da es unmittelbar bespielbar ist, hat es vielleicht ein paar Vorteile im Gegensatz zu den anderen Devices, die immer noch irgendwie mit ROMs und Einrichtung in Gang gesetzt werden müssen.
